My Experience in the Office of Congressman Tom Malinowski

Hi everyone! My name is Katherine Dailey (she/her), and I’m a rising sophomore planning to study Public and International Affairs, with possible certificates in French and Journalism. At Princeton, I am involved with The Daily Princetonian, Princeton College Democrats, Whig-Clio, and Matriculate. I’m also an amateur baker and painter, though despite my best quarantine efforts, I still can’t ride a skateboard.

This summer, I’ve spent the last ten weeks working on Capitol Hill with Congressman Tom Malinowski, who represents New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District, just north of Princeton. I’ve been lucky enough to be working in-person in our Washington, D.C. office! I’m also super excited to be working with Service Focus this coming year!

My day-to-day work varies a lot, but one of my main responsibilities is answering our office phones to talk to our constituents. I’ve loved hearing all of the different perspectives of the people of the district, as well as helping them resolve casework. I’ve also done a lot of policy work, particularly in the field of foreign affairs, and have drafted talking points and research for the Congressman on a number of issues from Afghanistan to China to Cuba. It’s been incredibly fulfilling to see my work in our press releases and interview quotes!

Getting to see our federal government in action has been so interesting, and I’ve loved being able to work with all of the different teams in our office, from the legislative team to the communications team to the constituent relations staff to our administrative side. Every Congressional office is a complex machine in its own way, and I have loved being able to see Congressman Malinowski’s in action and take part in it!
