My Summer at New Hope Housing

Hi everyone! My name is Megan King, and I am from Las Vegas, NV. I am a rising sophomore concentrating in ORFE with intended certificates in Applications of Computing and Robotics and Intelligent Systems. On campus, I am a member of the club tennis team, co-founder of Common Cents, and an OA leader.

This summer, I am interning at New Hope Housing (NHH) in Houston, Texas, through Princeton Internships in Civic Service. NHH is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing affordable and permanent housing with supportive services to Houston’s most vulnerable citizens. They have 9 locations throughout Houston with nearly 1,400 units of safe housing and services to help create stable living environments.

I worked with 3 departments this summer: Fund Development, Finance, and HR. For Fund Development, I created the Reed Resource Guide Map which was a map that detailed the surrounding area of Reed, NHH’s first supportive housing property for families with children. The map showcased important surrounding locations such as schools, grocery stores, medical resources, etc. to assist on-site staff to guide residents. For the Finance department, I created a 35-page Property Manager Accounting Training guide to assist all property managers as they oversee their property’s finances. Lastly, I designed a 6-page HR Newsletter for the Communications Department which spotlights employees and highlights important company announcements and information.

Everyday, I worked on each project and would assist in anything else the corporate office needed. My projects are hopefully meant to make a meaningful impact for NHH and all their residents. The newsletter will keep employees engaged and boost morale. The map will assist on-site staff to guide residents and create a smooth transition for incoming families. The training guide will reduce accounting errors and be a helpful resource for new property managers.

So far, I have loved my time at NHH and they have taught me so much about the inner workings of a non-profit and the affordable housing industry!
